The Friends of Pompeys Pillar invites you to take a journey through our website to explore and learn more about the history of Pompeys Pillar National Monument. Pompeys Pillar National Monument lies 25 miles east of Billings, Montana and contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization and was a driving force for bringing Pompeys Pillar back into the public lands domain. Their efforts resulted in the purchase of this historical land from the Foote family by the Bureau of Land Management in 1991. From its private ownership, to its registration as a national landmark and now its status as a national monument, Pompeys Pillar has been supported by a dedication corps of volunteers who love history and Pompeys Pillar.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar’s mission is to preserve and protect Pompeys Pillar National Monument which is the only remaining physical evidence on the trail of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. We do this through interpretation, education, special projects, and to support the BLM in its management of the site. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends of Pompeys Pillar successfully accomplishes this mission. We look forward to your visit.
