Volunteers began the Friends of Pompeys Pillar, then known Pompeys Pillar Preservation Committee and later the Pompeys Pillar Historical Association. Then, like now, volunteers played a pivotal role in preserving and protecting Pompeys Pillar.
There are many volunteer opportunities available with the Friends of Pompeys Pillar. We invite you to join us in helping to preserve, protect, educate about and create a memorable experience for visitors to Pompeys Pillar National Monument.
Friends of Pompeys Pillar volunteers will work in partnership with BLM staff and whether you are a BLM Ranger or a Friends of Pompeys Pillar volunteer, you will be treated equally by the Monument Manager. We work hard to create a “team” approach to the various activities and duties that occur at Pompeys Pillar. Volunteers are treated with respect and are frequently thanked and always appreciated.
Do you like retail work? The Friends of Pompeys Pillar manages the gift store at Pompeys Pillar. You could assist customers, help with displays and run the cash register.
Are you friendly and like hospitality? You could be a greeter/docent at the Pillar greeting some of the 35,000 annual visitors to the site.
Do you like talking about history and especially Lewis and Clark history? Volunteers are needed in the Interpretive Center, at the signature and on top of the Pompeys Pillar to talk to visitors about the historical significance of what they are seeing. During May and September we have a number of school groups who visit Pompeys Pillar and volunteers are needed to talk to the school-aged visitors.
Volunteers can also work in the fee station greeting visitors and collecting fees when they enter Pompeys Pillar. Volunteers can also assist BLM staff with maintenance and grounds keeping tasks and extra volunteers are always needed for special events, like Clark Days.
A new volunteer opportunity has opened with the opening of our Friends of Pompeys Pillar office in Billings. If you like office work, this might be an opportunity for you.
So whether you like to talk to others or work alone or whether you like to work inside or outside on the beautiful Pompeys Pillar grounds and on the rock, we have a place for you. Training will be provided regardless of the volunteer activity that interests you.
All volunteers working at Pompeys Pillar National Monument must undergo a background check as required by Bureau of Land Management regulations.
